The challenge was simple: create a luxurious digital version of a glossy magazine. The client was Abyat: a major retailer of homewares in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Their marketing partner, Kuwait City based Asasati, approached Start Digital with their plans to create a glossy promotional magazine. Their question was: “Can you convert a magazine into an app for iPad?’
The answer of course was yes. And we agreed to provide a few sample pages of how the magazine would look on a tablet or smartphone. Although we were competing against four other agencies, Abyat decided they liked our take on the magazine the best.
We produced the digital version of a glossy magazine over an intense, three week period. First we created an iPad version, then adjusted the pages for Android tablet and then smartphone. The process is made easier with Twixl, a robust publishing system for mobile devices.
Since we completed this project, Twixl has updated its system, and now offers a ‘publish by article format’. This is more expensive, but it provides the user with a far better experience: allowing them to download to their device only the content they need or want. With the Twixl classic version, you must download the whole publication at once in order to access it: in much the same way that the old Adobe DPS system demanded.
The finished Abyat project is the equivalent of 148 print pages and comes packed with interactive features, slide shows and galleries. To date it has seen over 6000 downloads across all devices.
