Graphic design – Packaging
Our work with the Grunting Growler is ongoing and it is a great example of how partnership with a creative agency can be key in developing brands.
We love the Grunting Growler. Not just because we like the occasional glass of craft beer (Kyle excluded: he only drinks cider). We love the Grunting Growler because its owner, Jehad Hatu, is just so passionate about what he does.
Developing brands with design
Jehad is Chicago by birth, Glasgow by choice, and his Grunting Growler shop sells ‘growlers’ – large refillable bottles of craft beer. He stocks a rotating selection of brews, so whenever you go there’s something new to try. Its a great way of enjoying the best in craft brewing. And you can bring back the Growler for a refill.
Our work for Jehad so far has included labels for his own limited edition lager and pale ale: The Grunter and the The Growler. Jehad already had a brand: based on a logo he had created as he founded the company. Its a punchy, aggressive boar (the Grunting Growler, gettit?). And for the limited edition lagers it was crucial that this was central to the design.
Another task was to create a tasting leaflet. This is an eight panel leaflet in heavier than normal card. It has a roughened up look and feel: because that suits the DIY feel of the Growler shop. The leaflet explains simply and concisely how craft beer is created – but its main purpose is to be used as part of a Grunting Growler tasting session.
These are fairly small projects, but they are the kind of projects that are key when it comes to developing brands. The limited edition beer was a great way for Jehad to extend the Grunting Growler reach, to add value for his customers, and to define what he is about (great beer!). Similarly, the leaflet for the tasting event defined the Grunting Growler’s core values.
